Join LAWTF at PRIDE! with the City of West Hollywood!

On Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 2pm As part of LAWTF's Pride Month programming with the City of West Hollywood,, LAWTF will host the program PRIDE! at the Kings Road Park located at 1000 Kings Road, West Hollywood, CA 90069.

Nestled by the backdrop of trees, plants, and a fountain waterfall, LAWTF will present performers inside the multipurpose room at Kings Road Park. Performers will give creative voice to the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community.

June is also the month of the Annual "Juneteenth" Celebration, an African American tribute that honors June 19, 1865, the date the last slaves in the Union were informed of the Emancipation Proclamation. This took place in Texas, the last state that informed slaves of their freedom two and a half years later. In honor of Juneteenth, LAWTF will also include performers who speak to human rights, civil rights, and voting rights.

Performer Vanessa Harris-Adams (A Simple Act of Courage), actor/vocalist Mzuri Moyo (The Fannie Lou Hamer Story), R. Sky Palkowitz (Calling America: Don't Hang Up!!), and poet Yazmin Watkins (Love Without Limits: The Bi-Laws of Love).

Confirmed performers include performer Vanessa Harris-Adams (A Simple Act of Courage, Rosa Parks), actor/ vocalist Mzuri Moyo (The Fannie Lou Hamer Story), performance artist R. Sky Palkowitz (Calling America: Don't Hang Up!!), and poet Yazmin Watkins (Love Without Limits: The Bi-Laws of Love). Stay tuned for more on this program as we get closer.

These LAWTF Pride Month programs are FREE to the public, and donations are welcome.

Many thanks to the City of West Hollywood for a third time grant making this program possible this year for its residents and the public-at-large! To RSVP, please call (818) 760-0408.

The curtain has fallen on another year of LAWTF performances and we want to start by saying a big thank you to all the artists, hosts, volunteers, and staff that came together to make the 20th Anniversary Festival such a rousing success!

We also would be remiss if we didn’t give a “standing ovation” to our most gracious hosts, the wonderful staff at the Renberg Theatre, who opened their doors and lent us their beautiful stage for the weekend.

Beginning with the opening night Gala and continuing throughout the weekend audience members were treated to a diverse set of performances that ran the artistic gammit. These talented women and a few absolutely outstanding men inspired us with their honesty, courage, and insight.

Take a moment to look through our photo album and get a feel for what a truly magical experience this year’s festival was.

We can’t wait to see you again next year!

A Perfect 20!

It’s that time of year again!

Preparations and planning are in full swing for the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival’s Emerald 20th Anniversary.

In just a few short weeks some of the most amazing actors, dancers, vocalists, storytellers, poets, and performance artists will take to the stage at the Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner’s Renberg Theatre in Hollywood for what can only be described as an unforgettable series of performances.

Expect to see new faces along with some old favorites.  With themes such as “Speaking of Men”,  “Keeping it Real!” and “Not for Children Only” there promises to be a little something for everyone.

Now, on one hand we don’t want to give the whole thing away, but on the other a sneak peak never hurt anyone, right??!!!

So here is just a little taste of what you can expect when you join us at the theatre March 21 – 24, 2013.

Follow us on Facebook and get a behind the scenes look at the artists who will be performing at this year’s festival.

Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival Surpassed Kickstarter Goal

"Lose not courage, lose not faith, go forward."
Marcus Garvey, social activist

The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, with the support of over 120 Kickstarter backers, successfully completed the first of our online fundraising campaigns. The Festival received a total of $11,786 (not including those who mailed in checked or donated via Pal Pal.) These loyal backers gave throughout our 30-day “all or nothing” campaign.

Due to government grant budget cuts from city, county and state funders, we received a loss of over $20,000 from our previous government grants. We sought an easy and effective way of raising the funds. Our LACAC Administrative Intern, Carter Goffigon suggested that we use Kickstarter as a platform to raise the money we needed to continue providing the same amount of quality performances, as well as workshops and panels, for our milestone 20th Anniversary Festival that will take place March 21-24, 2012.

Even though there were times when we thought we might not make our goal, our many dedicated supporters came through in the end. They gave from their hearts, allowing us to surpass our goal.

Many thanks to those who gave to us in our time of need. We are truly blessed to have so many people that believe in our mission and who know that the Festival has played an important part in the Los Angeles arts community over the last 19 years.

For those who wanted to participate but could not for any reason, it is not too late. We still welcome and need you to give to the Festival, either by mailing in a check, or through PayPal. Please visit our website (www.lawtf.com) for more information on how to donate, as well as other ways to contribute to the Festival. We may also be starting up our second online fundraiser at a later date or host another type of fundraiser, so you will have more opportunities to give in the future.

Thank you for continuing to support the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival!
