TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
This panel discussion will cover the professionals you need to make your solo show shine from the director and producer to lighting and sound; from costumes and dramaturge to marketing and publicity, not to mention the theatre you will perform in. You will learn how to create a supportive team that will make your dream show a reality! This panel discussion will be moderated by Karen A. Clark, with panelist Karen AschenbachReggie BrownBrandon Deese, Sky Palkowitz, Allison Queen and Shanae Sharon.

Karen A. Clark is a singer, songwriter, poet, performer, and a Senior Vice President who leads a Segment Marketing Strategy for City National Bank. Named one of LA's Top 20 Black Female Power Players in L.A. Business, by Focus Magazine in 2013, Clark's a reputable leader in the banking industry and making her mark promoting her LP, The Karen A. Clark Project!
Theatrically, Clark has played the lead in productions such as "Brixton Recovery," "Tambourines to Glory," "Wine in the Wilderness," and has been in ensemble casts for "Colored Girls," "Little Ham," "Ododo,"  and "The Wiz", to name a few. "The Women" is her second one woman theatrical show. The first was "A Corporate Affair," produced by the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival in 2008. Clark is a Board member with The Los Angeles Women's Theatre FestivalDuke Media Foundation,Educating Young Minds, and Streetlights. Locally, Karen A. Clark has been featured at such popular venues as The Long Beach Jazz Festival (Mainstage 2 years), Central Avenue Jazz Fest, Pip's, and the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival.  
Karen Aschenbach (Creative Process Coaching) is a writer, director, actor, and producer whose background includes theatrical work in New York, Connecticut, and Los Angeles, short films and independent features in San Francisco and Los Angeles, a video production company producing promotional media and educational products for Fortune 500 and Silicon Valley corporations, and start-ups. Aschenbach's work has been seen around the globe on television and in festivals from Japan to Croatia and throughout the U.S. She has written many screenplays and short stories, directed for stage and screen and has been coaching other artists for the past ten years. Aschenbach's Creative Process Coaching™ business, which starts with the admonition to "jump into your art", encourages her clients to show their true colors and to first hear then speak from the authenticity of their unique voice. Her motto is that she is an intuitive mirror to keep you true to YOUR vision.



Reginald D. Brown is a member of theDirectors Guild of America, Inc. and an accomplished television writer in the Writers Guild of AmericaWest. His Reginald Brown Productions is a Signatory Company with the Directors Guild of America, Incand SAG/AFTRA.  Currently, Brown is serving as a Co-writer and Co-Director on The Last Mambo, a historical documentary about the evolution of Latin Jazz and Salsa Dance Fanatics in the San Francisco Bay area.
Brown is the writer/producer/director of Profile in Courage: Linda L. Smith, based on Ms. Smith's 3 Volume Journal,"Love Letters To The Lord." Brown has written and directedGreat Women of Color, at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, and is the director of the musical Hattie, What I Need You To Know, starring Vickilyn Reynolds. Brown is a former Co-Chair of the DGA's African-American Steering Committeeand has spent the last 17 years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles teaching TV Production Workshops as well as an instructor in Cinema in the Bill Cosby Summer Digital Film Institute at the University of Southern California.  At present, he is an Instructor in Cinema and Media Arts at Los Angeles Southwest College.
Brandon Deese, with over eight years of experience in the traditional production and digital media space, looks ahead to create interactive platforms for storytellers of all ages. To date, Brandon has created and collaborated with networks such as ABC Family, HBO, NBC Universal, and, of course the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival.
Sky Palkowitz, known as "The Delusional Diva", is an avant-garde multimedia performance artist and character illusionist from New York.  She's performed around the country and all over Los Angeles, can be seen on TV, internet and film, and recently toured Southern CA playing Nurse in Romeo and Juliet with Shakespeare by the Sea in parks to over 25,000 people. Palkowitz just returned from the off-Broadway premiere of her solo show, Calling America: Don't Hang Up!!

Allison Queen is President/Owner of Queen Publicity, a full service public relations and publicity agency providing services and consultations to creative artists, businesses, non-profits, product launches, film and television productions, theatrical productions, book authors and more.  Prior to founding her company, Queen interned at CBS TelevisionDavidson Choy Publicity, and the American Civil Liberties Union. A native New Yorker, Queen graduated from UCLA and also holds a Law Degree. Queen Publicity is often retained by larger agencies on the East Coast and has a reputation for securing excellent media placements and delivering concrete results. 
Shanae Sharon (LAWTF Board of Directors) is a native of Philadelphia, PA who holds a BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Pittsburgh and is an alumna of the Lincoln Center Theater Director's Lab. Accepted into the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Observership Program, Sharon was a founding member of the River View Players in Harlem and of the Redeye Theatre Project in Pittsburgh for which she directed several 24 hour plays. Additionally, Sharon has directed plays and stage readings for the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre, the National Black Theatre FestivalBlack Theatre Network and co-directed a production of Annie for Frick International Studies. Sharon also directed the LAWTF 20th Anniversary Festival, A Perfect 20! and has also written a screenplay entitled, Timing which was selected for the 2009 National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) Writer's Workshop.

EMPOWERMENT DAY offers a day full of information, training, and career advice from industry professionals for anyone seeking a career as a solo performer or contemplating theatrical production in Los Angeles. The day is designed to uplift, inspire, and educate local solo artists.

LAWTF will be highlighting its workshops and panels as we get closer to our exciting educational event and is kicking off LAWTF's first spotlights for our 9:30 -11:00 a.m. workshops below:
  
CREATING A SOLO SHOW
This workshop is designed to cover the solo show production process from thought to pen; covering such topics as one's motivations to write, creative visioning, owning one's voice, making the personal universal, creating a compelling story and determining the distinctions between a solo show and a solo play. This workshop event will be facilitated by Debra DeLisoIona Morris, and Terrie Silverman.

Debra DeLiso has been a theatre artist for over twenty-five years working as an actor, choreographer/dancer, director, playwright, and teacher. DeLiso has guided the writing and directed nearly 200 one-person shows at the American Academy of Dramatic ArtsUSC, and in professional theatres. DeLiso thoroughly enjoys the challenging and personal work of taking actors through the writing process into performance. She has written two of her own solo performance pieces, one about her mother, one about the visionary dance artist Isadora Duncan. She also conceived the play Cock Tales, an evening of wickedly original male monologues from some of L.A.'s best playwrights which ran for 10 months in Hollywood.


Iona Morris (For You and M.O.I.S.T) is a producer, director, dramaturg and actor for over 25 years. Morris has currently penned three one-woman shows and has been a contributing writer and director to several others. Some of her many TV credits include roles on The DistrictCold CaseLaw & OrderMoesha, and General Hosptial. Her extensive voice-over work includes the original voice of Storm from the X-men cartoon series, Medusa in the Fantastic Four and Robbie Robinson's wife in Spiderman, just to name a few.

Terrie Silverman
Terrie Silverman is a writer, solo-performer, director, Artist-in-Residence at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts and is the Founder of Creative Rites Workshops & Coaching. Silverman's been teaching writing and performance for fourteen years to groups and individuals to release your inner-critic, access your authentic voice and become a brave, moving storyteller. She also has a Solo-Show Master Class and has helped develop and direct a number of award-winning solo shows. Silverman loves helping people discover they have a voice and that their story matters. She's facilitated workshops for the California Arts Council, Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Department, the Museum of Contemporary ArtThe City of West Hollywood, the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival, The West Hollywood Book Fair, Screen Actor's Guild Media Access, the Independent Writer's of Southern California, LACAMFT- Expressive Arts, UCLArts & HealingSenior Arts Foundation and Women in Theatre.

This is a day full of career adivce from industry professionals for anyone seeking a career as a solo performer or contemplating theatrical production in Los Angeles and is desgined to uplift and inspire solo artists in the area.

REGISTRATION: Early registration is $75.00 for the general public and $50.00 for students (school ID must be present for entry) which includes an all-day pass. The EARLY BIRD registration fee deadline is July 31st and will be $95.00 for all thereafter.

Founded in 1993 by Adilah Barnes and Miriam Reed, LAWTF holds the distinction of being the oldest Annual Solo Festival in Los Angeles celebrating powerful women performers. LAWTF is a critically-acclaimed international festival which has produced close to 500 extraordinary solo artists from around the globe. These multicultural and multi-disciplined artists represent such diverse disciplines as theatre, dance, storytelling, performance art, performance poetry, spoken word, mime, aerialism, music, song, and stand-up comedy.

LAWTF is Now Accepting Applications for the Paid Marketing and Development Summer Intern!

The Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival
is Now Accepting Applications for the
LAWTF Marketing and Development
Summer Intern!



What: The Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program provides 10-week paid summer internships (40 hours/week) to eligible undergraduate college students.

Students are paid $400/week to work in nonprofit literary, performing and presenting arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout Los Angeles County.

Interns also participate in additional educational components provided by the Arts Commission. 

Who: To be eligible to participate, students must meet the following criteria: 
·  Enrolled in a community college, four-year college or university program, and have completed at least one semester by June 1, 2014. 
·  Completed at least one semester of college by June 1, 2014or will complete their undergraduate degree between May 1 - September 1, 2014 in order to be eligible to participate. 
·  Proof of residency (state issued ID or driver license) and college transcripts are required. 
·  Interested students are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the arts. 
·  Students must either reside in Los Angeles County or attend school in Los Angeles County. 

Candidates can be sought from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the arts.

All college students regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, or disability who meet the above criteria are eligible to apply to participate in the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program. Students invited to participate in the program must provide a copy of their college transcripts verifying undergraduate enrollment.

Students who have previously participated in the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program are not eligible to participate a second time. 
When: This internship program takes place between June and August 2014. Interns will work for a specified ten-week period.

Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. --“In Honor Of” Champagne GALA & Awards Ceremony.

Ted Lange: Known internationally for his portrayal of Isaac Washington on the long-running TV series “The Love Boat,” Ted received the Renaissance Man Theatre Award from the NAACP for his stage accomplishments as actor, playwright (23 plays), and director (including the current comedy “Classic Couples Counseling” at the Secret Rose Theatre). His one-man show in which he portrays Paul Lawrence Dunbar, “Behind the Mask,” tours worldwide.

Starletta DuPois: Although known for her work on TV (“Lost”) and in hit films (“The Notebook,” “Friday After Next,” “Big Momma’s House,” “First Sunday,” “Waiting to Exhale”), Starletta has the distinction of being one of the few to have portrayed all three female characters in “A Raisin in the Sun.” She also tours with her solo show “Order My Steps.”

Friday, March 28, 2014 at 8:00 p.m.--“Transformations”

Fay Hauser-Price:  Familiar to national audiences as Detective Salena Wiley on “The Young and the Restless,” Fay has also appeared on “Glee” and in “Roots: The Next Generations,” “Candyman: Farewell to the flesh,” “Akeelah and the Bee,” and more. She has produced, written and directed the series “Living With Soul,” “24/7,” and “Red Hot & Cool.”  Her stage credits include “Twelfth Night” and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Fay has worked with the LAWTF in various capacities for 15 years.

Angela Robinson-Witherspoon: A veteran stage actress (“Sirens,” “Happy Endings,” “The Last Straw,” “A Song for You”). She has also been visible in film (“The Moment After,” “48 Hours,” “Crossroads,” “The Meteor Man”) and on TV (“Ugly Betty,” “Joan of Arcadia,” “The Wayans Bros.” and “3rd Rock From the Sun”).

Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.--“Mirrored Reflections”

Sky Palkowitz: The popular performance artist is billed as The Delusional Diva, creating playing multiple characters in shows for children and adults. Also, classically trained, she toured 22 cities last year with Shakespeare By The Sea. Her latest solo show is named “Calling America: Don’t Hang Up!”

Kat Kramer: Named Entertainer of the Year by the LA Comedy Awards, her stage credits include “The Colors of Myself,” “Kriss Krossing,” “The Miracle Worker” and “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The daughter of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kramer, she presents the film series “Films That Change the World.”  She is a columnist for the Tolucan Times.

Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 8:00 p.m.--“Rising Above”

James Pickens, Jr.: James has been a regular in a number of TV series, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Roseanne,” “The Practice,” ‘The X-Files,” “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Another World.” With a strong stage background, he appeared with Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson in the Negro Ensemble Company production of “A Soldier’s Play” and also performed with New York’s famed  Roundabout Theatre Company (“A Raisin in the Sun”). He won a Drama Desk Award for his performance in “Balm in Gilead.”

Karen A. Clark: A favorite with LAWTF audiences with her piece “The Women,” celebrating the women of her family, and her mother in particular. Also a singer and recording artist, her latest album(“The Karen A. Clark Project” on the C-Sick Records label)  has been described as “Jill Scott meets Sade,” covering the subjects of love, life, career, companionship, sensuality and city life, Although she states that the principal fan base for her music  is comprised of women, “as an added bonus, men like the sexy content.”

Sunday, March 30, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.--“It’s All Relative”

Bertila Damas: Winner of the Back Stage Garland Award for her work in “Electricidad” at the Mark Taper, where Bertila also performed in “Street of the Sun.” She also acted at D.C.’s Arena Stage and the New York Shakespeare Festival.  Her TV roles include characters on “Grimm,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

Adleane Hunter: A director for over 25 years, Adleane has worked with the Robey Theatre Company, St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, the Actors Theatre of Phoenix, The Black Theatre Troupe in Phoenix (winning a Zoni Award of Excellence” for “The Bluest Eye”), Illinois Repertory Theatre, Gaslamp Quarter Theatre, Towne Street Theatre, and Inner City Cultural Center. She is included in “Drama Mamas,” a film documentary about Black female directors.

Sunday, March 30, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.--“Riffs”

Ingrid Graham: The dancer and choreographer has worked at Merce Cunningham, California African American Museum, Edinburgh Festival, Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival , Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Ingrid has appeared in Vogue, Glamour and Vibe magazines.

Barry Shabaka Henley: A veteran theatre actor, Shabaka’s  career includes stints with the Center Theatre Group, West Coast Black Repertory Theatre and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. His stage credits include “Jitney,” “Waiting for Godot,” “Rabbit Foot,” “Richard II” and “As You Like it.” He has won Obie, Olivier and Drama Desk Awards.  His recent notable films include “Carrie,” “State of Play” and “Collateral.” His TV credits include major roles on “Luck,” “Barbershop” and “Robbery Homicide Division.”

LAWTF Presents The 21st Annual Festival "Giving Voice"

The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival (LAWTF) marks 21 years of producing close to 500 extraordinary multicultural and multidisciplinary solo performers from around the globe.

The longest-running annual solo festival for women in Los Angeles, LAWTF will return March 27-30, 2014 to the Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Avenue, Venice, CA 90291.

The Champagne Gala and Awards Ceremony on March 27, 2014 will be held in honor of exceptional women who have made laudable contributions in theatre. Following the reception at 7:00 p.m., the festivities continue at 8:00 p.m. with the presentation of the Integrity, Eternity, Rainbow, Maverick and Infinity Awards to distinguished women.

Cynthia Ling Lee: “Rapture” The intimate and bittersweet rapture of poetic love-in-separation is reinterpreted through cultural and gendered difference in this contemporary abhinaya (emotional expression in Indian dance) piece.
Ansuya Nathan: “Long Live the King”  A big fan of Elvis, a young Indian woman arrives in Australia with her husband the day The King dies. She fears her marriage is drifting apart due to pressures of migration and the impending birth of their first child.
Marlene Ondrea Nichols: “Dress Kiss Me” A dress becomes a bridge to understanding a woman’s seamstress mother who hopes to create enough beauty through clothing to block memories of war and loss.
Lisa Marie Rollins: “Ungrateful Daughter” An adopted Black girl shares her mixed experience growing up in an Anglo family.

“Rising Above”
Dacyl Acevedo: “Will Work For”  This farcical journey uses clowning, storytelling and physical theatre to illustrate how one actor navigates through the trials of unemployment to survive the economic crash.
Jozanne Marie: “Beautiful” Jamaican-born, Jozanne shares her brave story of survival, faith and victory in a personal story about a girl, an island and a secret.
Anita Noble: “Polly Bemis”  From “Unbinding Our Lives” by Geralyn Horton, Anita portrays the historical Polly Bemis, a pioneering Chinese woman who was bought and sold as a saloon girl and ultimately became a famous figure of the Wild West.

"It’s All Relative”
Estela Garcia: “Remedios Varo: La Alquinista”  In Spanish and with supertitles, this piece uses multimedia to bring alive paintings by visual artist Remedios Varo that speak as metaphors for her personal family life.

Karen Bankhead: “Etta Mae Humphries: And the Rest Is History”  Etta Mae Humphries, better known as “the Black Forrest Gump,” is full of wisdom, humor and anecdotes of her influence on celebrities. She knows everybody who is anybody.
Mwanza Furaha: “Excerpts from Cabaret Underground” This jazz cabaret artist speaks to her own life and pays tribute to some of the vocalists she has had the pleasure of working with during her career.
The Lindz: “WASP” This poet speaks on relationship-related, socially conscious, goofy, insightful, sardonic and riotous poetry.

The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival was founded by Executive Producer Adilah Barnes and Miriam Reed. The Festival is an annual event unique among American cultural institutions and should not be missed.

Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival is a non-profit organization.  Admission to the Gala is $45, or two tickets for $80 (includes light fare and Champagne). For the other programs, ticket prices this year include general admission single show tickets at $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. Students, seniors, and groups of ten or more, $18. Children 12 and under, $10.
